How can a quote be simple? This unsigned comment was added by 68.239.230.5 (talk • changes) 22:14, 15 April 2006.

Interesting question. Obviously, there are quotes which are already in simple English. But aside from that, the point of this wikiproject (as I see it) is not to simplify quotes. If we did that, they would no longer be quotes: they would be paraphrases. The point of this wikiproject is to take quotes as they are, and provide explanations of their meaning using simple English. Additionally, all of the infrastructure is meant to be in simple English so that people who do not know English very well may use it and edit it. That is what Simple English Wikiquote is for, I think. --Cromwellt|talk 19:37, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
So the Shakespeare quotes on the Italian and Spanish Wikiquotes are not quotes, for example? The Aristotle quotes on the English Wikiquote are not quotes, for example? I think they are quotes. They are translated quotes. They are still good. People are contributing to and supporting many Wikiquote projects that have translated quotes. So, quotes can be translated into Simple English, too. I think all Wikiquotes that use translations should also give the original words, too, or at least a direct link to them (not just an interwiki to a list of quotes that might or might not contain the quote of interest somewhere on the page and the reader has to find it). --Coppertwig 03:50, 12 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
By the way, the German page for de:Emily Brontë, for example, gives the original English words as well as a German translation. I think that's the proper way to do it. --Coppertwig 04:25, 12 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Explanation of purpose of Simple English Wikiquote on Main Page

Someone deleted a sentence and I put it back. The person didn't say the reason for deleting it. Maybe it was deleted by mistake while the person was making another change. The sentence describes what this Wikiquote is about. Please talk about it if you disagree. --Coppertwig 03:50, 12 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Number of pages??

The automatic count of pages is wrong. I count 44 pages linked from the Main Page. The automatic count gives only 34. That's why it says "or more". Does anyone know how to fix the automatic count? --Coppertwig 23:54, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!!! If you want this site to stay here, you can vote at meta:Proposals_for_closing_projects. Someone has made a proposal there to close down this site. Vote "Support" if you want this site to close down. Vote "Oppose" if you want this site to stay, you don't want it to close down. I think you need to create an account and log in to meta with a username for your vote to count. Thanks! --Coppertwig 02:06, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Red Links

Donot add new proverb pages to the main page if they donot be on the Wikiquote yet. If you do that everything will be red and that does not look good. Uswibèta 04:50, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

There are a whole lot of red links on the main page. If I can not add one then maybe you should remove them all. --Z 20:18, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, I think that shalled not be done. Now you can easy see what for important pages are still needed and you can make them with one 'simple' click. Uswibèta 04:40, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes it is good to add new red links. Sometimes it is good to take away red links. The red links that are there now are not the best possible. They are a copy of the English Wikiquote Main Page from a long time ago. People can change them to links that they think are more important for Simple English Wikiquote. If you don't like a red link that someone adds, then say why you think that link is not as important as another red link that is there now. --Coppertwig 14:55, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Azerbeidzjani proverbs are not important. Uswibèta 15:25, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I never added a link for Azerbeidzjani proverbs--Z 15:29, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, it was Sweedish. But what's the difference between Sweedisch and Azerbezjani? http://simple.wikiquote.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page&diff=5817&oldid=5816 Uswibèta 15:34, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Maybe it should be spelled "Swedish" instead of "Sweedisch". I looked on the Internet and found many pages about "Swedish proverbs". English Wikiquote has "Swedish proverbs". I like this one, from a page on the Internet: "Fear less, hope more; Eat less, chew more; Whine less, breathe more; Talk less, say more; Love more, and all good things will be yours". I would like to see that in the Swedish language. --Coppertwig 15:50, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
The English wikiquote has a page on swedish proverbs.--Z 15:53, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism needs dealing with

Not sure where to put this but User:Beev needs dealing with. I've reverted most of the vandalism but someone with admin tools needs to delete Nuclear and the bad redirects left over. JoshuaZ 19:29, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

AZERBAIJANIAN?!!!

Who on earth wrote "Azerbaijanian"?!! Shouldn't it be "Azerbaijani"? -- Runningfridgesrule, 23:58 May 31 2008

Christmas, design?

Can a different quote please be selected for the Main Page? Christmas is not "Christ's birthday". Jesus was not born on December 25. This was a move by the Catholic Chruch to transform Pagan holidays into Christian ones [1]. Also, the design is overdone, ostentatious, and really ugly, and needs to be reverted.

This whole project must be shut down. What a useless waste. Jonas D Rand 22:23, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Jonas, if you say this should be shut down, that is saying SEWP should be shut down VandalFighterFR bad warning? 22:24, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't see how. I meant SEWQ, which, unlike its more useful sister project, has not attracted the participation or interest of a non-English speaker or a non-native English speaker, to my knowledge. Jonas D. Rand 22:27, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, it just needs some time to grow and it will have a lot of editors. That is what happendned with SEWP. VandalFighterFR bad warning? 22:30, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Jonas, your poor opinion of our wiki has already been stated, we aren't closing down, we are growing. Christmas is the most celebrated holiday in the world, and it is fine to have some decorations for it. The quote will be changing to this one for Christmas Day, a non-religious one, but a Christmas one. The design is fine, and was decided upon by the community. And this is coming from a Christian, and not my Wikipedian-self, Christmas was created to celebrate Jesus' birthday, but now is used for gift-giving, Satan Clause, holly and trees, decorations, etc. Though it is not the exact day Jesus was born, that is why it was started. But, it is a globally celebrated holiday (and often non-religious), and is fine for Wikiquote. If you would like to add something for another holiday (especially a QOTD), that is quite alright. We did so for Thanksgiving and 9/11, and are planning New Years. American Eagle (talk) 22:34, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW AE, notice that I am back? VandalFighterFR bad warning? 22:37, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

That is not why the holiday was originally celebrated. The approximate date of the winter solstice was the original reason it was celebrated, though not as Christmas (By the way, which 9/11 terrorist attack? The US-backed one on Chile in 1973, or the one on New York City?)

That quote is fine, by the way.

StaticFalcon, I predicted that this 'retirement' wouldn't last, based on the previous 3(+?) times that you did it.

I was gone for a while, unlike I usually was. VandalFighterFR bad warning? 22:52, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

As for the design, I believe it is too tacky, and the lime green is not very visible. It is a terrible eye sore. 68.96.213.118 22:54, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your comments. However, it will not be changing just because you don't like it. About your Christianity comments, I really don't care you don't like Christmas. You have always stated that you are left-wing, communist and non-Christian, so it is to be expected. I will not be turning this into another wiki-religion war. So, leave it alone, it was decided upon by the community. Thank you. American Eagle (talk) 23:40, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Being communist and left-wing has nothing to do with the fact that it is not a good design and, at the very least, a darker green should be chosen. 68.96.213.118 00:30, 25 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The design is the same as it always is, just new colors and pictures. Anyways, I chosen different green colors. I hope this looks good on your computer, and that you (and everyone else here) have a great Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone! American Eagle (talk) 02:42, 25 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
